Licensing and Environmental Approvals
Native Title
A Native Title Claim EC06/1 has been lodged by the Lumugal People over the area covered by the two Mining Lease Applications, (80/599 and 80/600) As a result, RMC is involved in the negotiation process with the Kimberley Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, the representative organisation of the claimant group.
The process requires agreement to a ‘Heritage Protection Agreement’ and also a ‘Negotiation Protocol for the Argyle Iron Ore Project’. To assist in the negotiation process, RMC has engaged the service of a very experience Native Title consultant: Mr. John Clarke of ‘Wanati Pty Ltd’.
Environment
RMC engaged environmental consultants, ‘ecologia Environment’ to carry out wet and dry season field trips, in 2004, 2005 and 2006 to complete work required by the Department of Industry and Resources Environmental Branch.
Survey activity included:
- Fauna survey
- Aboriginal heritage and ethnographic surveys
- Comprehensive botanical survey
- Mapping of priority flora in the vicinty of grid lines,
- Mapping of specific priority flora on the tenement, (cliff faces, ridge lines etc),
- Survey and mapping of possible Vine Thickets,
- Inspection, mapping species collection and identification of possible remnant rain forest, and
- Identification and mapping of any weeds introduced onto the tenement with an appropriate removal and destruction plan.
No Declared Rare Flora species were recorded in the surveys but four Priority Flora species were noted. Of the Priority Flora species, none are in areas likely to be affected by future mining.
During exploration activity, RMC has conducted an active campaign to remove and destroy weed species specifically passionflora foetida - stinking passion vine, which is found throughout the Eastern Kimberley.
